This star is made much faster by B swimming speed conservation. (Edit: As pointed out by Tyler Kehne, it's actually impossible without B swimming speed conservation.) When Mario swims using B, he can't gain speed past 7, but he can conserve up to 16 speed. Therefore, for some stars, it's worthwhile to build up speed. pannenkoek2012 demonstrated that this could save time ( /watch/wvZEcInGmTLGE ). Iwer Sonsch found good triangles to use for this in the previous ABC WR for Board Bowser's Sub ( /watch/AvTkjm4nCBonk ), hyperspeed walking along one slope and hyperspeed punching along the next. Iwer conserved 15.44 B swimming speed, and I was able to get it to 15.52. There's actually another pair of triangles that can be used to get more speed ( /watch/ozcmQBwmU7-mm gets 15.58, and more is likely possible) but it's too far away to be worthwhile. I repeatedly TASed a segment of this star, fed it to an automated optimization tool, TASed a segment, etc. It's a bit of a tedious process, but I'd rather not try to optimize swimming by hand. I'm glad to be done with the swimming-heavy stars. This star descends very quickly using a ceiling, similarly to a trick which is used in Board Bowser's Sub to a lesser extent. It's nothing precise at all; when Mario swims into ceilings, he gets pushed down, and what appears to be a wall is actually a very steep ceiling. This lets Mario descend extremely quickly.
