First, you're singing not as an abstract citizen but as an actual person, as if directly quoting William of Orange, and that points to the sheer importance placed upon this person in this country's history. Second, you cite William's "loyalty to the King of Spain." It's very rare for the anthem of a country to mention the name of another, let alone hint at loyalty to that country so, to make sense of the words, you're consequentially immersed in the very particular history in your country. ... 32
